8 Stay At Home Holiday Ideas

With all this time at home, it's easy to forget to take some time out. The best news is you don't need to travel far for a well-deserved break. I’ve rounded up some low budget activities, DIY projects, and free tips for the perfect at-home staycation.

1. Sleep outside

Got a tent and a private outdoor space? Why not set up a camping activity! Spend some time outside, away from social media. Getting out in nature can help regulate your sleep-wake cycle. If you have a projector, you can create movie nights outside too, just remember to keep screen time minimal.

2. Upcycle your holiday memories

It's not only eco-friendly, but it could boost your wellbeing and revamp your home at the same time.

Get creative and make a framed artwork of your holiday photos. Use that leftover living room wallpaper to spruce up old furniture or make a memory jar with your souvenirs. Great way to save money too, aside from all that online shopping.

3. Have an indoor spa day

Missing your favourite spa? Light some aromatherapy candles. Fill up a tub with some essential oils - lavender is my favourite. Then relax in bath bliss!

If your skin is feeling a little dehydrated, try an argan oil face mask. It is moisturising and doesn't appear to clog pores, good for spot-prone skin like mine.

Add some fresh cucumber to water for a glowing skin treat. Cucumbers are packed with nutrients and promote hydration.

4. Prepare a picnic

When it's too cold to hang out in the local park, get into the summer mood and prepare an indoor picnic! Lay the blanket out in your favourite room, or balcony and enjoy a leisurely lunch surrounded by your favourite tunes. Invite friends and family by video, if you can't meet up due to social distancing.

5. Take a tour of a national park

Watching scenes of nature can help relieve stress and anxiety. A necessity when working from home. There are several ways to connect to your favourite outdoor places from afar.

Do a virtual tour of the Lake District, virtual day trips to visit the rugged coastline of Ireland or embark on a virtual safari.

6. Plan for your next trip

Journaling is a great way to declutter. Take time to reflect, write down your goals on paper and create a plan to get there. Set a budget for savings, have a look at how you cut down on spending.

Make a bucket list of the places you want to visit or activities you want to do when you can travel safely again. Planning for the future can give you a sense of direction and purpose. Here are some cool templates I found on Pinterest.

7. Create an indoor meditation retreat

It's not always easy to switch off. Meditation can help anxiety and aid sleep naturally. Find a designated living space, free of clutter (not the home office). Grab some cushions, burn some incense and set the mood with warm natural lighting.

I have tried out a few apps but found that Insight Timer offers the best guided content without having to purchase a subscription.

8. Grow yourself happy

You don't need a garden to grow plants, think about how you can incorporate greenery into a windowsill, balcony or even within the house. Not only does gardening feel good, but it's also great for your health.

Make the most of the balmy evenings and create a staycation space with some solar lights or simple decorations. Keep the windows open to let in natural sunlight.

Growing your own vegetables is fun and a great way to save on the shopping bill.
